Finding Affordable Gymnastics Wear

My daughter has been taking gymnastics classes for a little more than a year, and she’s moving along steadily. She was moved up from level 2 to level 3 a few months ago. What has not improved, however, is her gymnastics wardrobe. She has a few leotards, but they are getting too small. Most weeks, she’ll go to class wearing athletic shorts and a t-shirt. They suffice, but she’d have more flexibility in leotards specifically designed for the purpose.

The problem? Gymnastics leotards can get pretty pricey, particularly because the stores most likely to carry them are specialty dance and athletic shops with high markups. We’d really rather not spend $30+ a pop each time she needs a new one — particularly because she has not yet reached the competition level. So when Walmart challenged me to see how the store could help me with our family’s sporting needs, I immediately thought about the leotard problem.

We’ve bought ballet leotards at Walmart in the past, so I was crossing my fingers that the inventory had expanded to include options designed specifically for gymnastics.  Luckily, that’s exactly what we found. Learn more about Everest Gymnastics and join us now.

The gymnastics leotards were shelved with the ballet ones, which is where I would’ve expected to find them, and they were really reasonably priced at just $10.48 apiece. There was only one in her size, so we bought the other a size up so she’ll grow into it. We had to do some creative adjusting to take the photo above without looking like she was wearing a paper bag 🙂

They are cute, though I wish there were more than 2 styles to choose from. More importantly though, they have excellent stretch and seem more durable than I would’ve expected for the price. Plus, they both came with cute little matching hair scrunchies like this:

We bought two leotards, but we’re going to keep our eye on the stock so we can get a couple more when more styles are added. Still, she only has one class a week at the moment, so she should be set for a while — or at least until she has another growth spurt. She’s probably going to be the tallest gymnast on the floor!
