Do you Shopkick? You Should!

There is a Target right across the street from my house, and I find myself there at least once or twice a week. A few weeks ago, I discovered something that I wish I’d known months ago: I can earn points toward gift cards and other prizes just for walking in to Target, among other stores.

Why am I just now learning about Shopkick? I saw a commercial for it and was intrigued enough to look up the app on my iPhone and download it. Suffice it to say that I LOVE it!

So what is Shopkick, exactly? Well, within the app, you earn kicks (a.k.a. points) for performing various actions. You can earn kicks just for looking through lookbooks from various retailers, for scanning products while in store, for purchases with any credit card linked to your Shopkick account, and — my favorite earner — for simply walking through the doors of stores like Target, Old Navy, Best Buy, Crate & Barrel and others.

You simply open the app before you walk in, then walk through the door of any store with an available walk-in credit. Wait a few seconds for the Shopkick signal to find your phone, and collect your points. Admittedly since the most recent update of the app, it sometimes takes a while to get walk-in points, but I’ve found that if I keep the app open for the first few minutes while I’m walking through the store, I usually get my kicks.

Also, as an iPhone 5 user, I’ve found that if I don’t get my kicks right away when I walk in, it helps to turn off LTE in my settings and just use 4G.

In the few weeks since I’ve been using the app, I’ve accrued more 8000 kicks, not counting the ones I’ve gotten for shopping with my linked credit & debit cards (those points take a while to show up on your account).

Yeah. I’m a little addicted. These aren’t all as a result of my obsessive kicking, though. When you refer friends to the app, Shopkick matches any kicks they collect, up to the first 2500. So in addition to the kicks I collect on my own, I get bonus kicks from friends I’ve referred.

To give you an idea of what 8000 kicks are worth, you can get a $20-25 gift card for 5000 points. But I’m saving up my kicks for something better: a Kate Spade handbag that will cost me 75,000 kicks. It will take some time for me to get there, but I’m all in at this point.

Seriously though, if you have a smartphone, Shopkick is an awesome way to earn points for doing things you would have done anyway, and for scanning products throughout the store. Which takes maybe 2-3 extra minutes. And if you like Shopkick on Facebook, they’ll alert you of days like today, when you can get bonus kicks for scanning.

If you scan all three of the products shown above (basically using the app to take a picture of the bar code with your phone’s camera), you can get an additional 200 kicks, for a total of 275! Without spending any money!

Not a bad deal. I’m a complete convert. And if you sign up with my referral link and earn lots of kicks, I’ll be your BFF 🙂

  1. I love to shopkick. My husband calls it my little habit. I’ll take that because my habit doesn’t cost a thing, in fact, I’m rewarded for it.
