Need a Water Filter? Pick It Up Today

For months, my husband and I have been meaning to buy a faucet-mounted water filter. We’ve had a Brita pitcher for a couple of years, and while it works for its intended purpose, we’re constantly having to refill it with just 3 people drinking water. When my stepsons arrive to spend the summer with us, I didn’t want to imagine how many times a day we’d have to refill the pitcher.

The problem? Whenever I go grocery shopping, I never remember to pick up a filter. They are located in a completely different section of the store from the groceries, and I never remember it until I get home from the store. So when Walmart recently offered me the opportunity to try out their new Pickup Today service, I knew it was time to finally buy that filter.

Pickup Today is a great new service that allows you to order items from and pick them up from your local store later that day. The service is free, so it can really save you some money on shipping, and this option is available on thousands on products in a variety of categories, including electronics, media and gaming, toys, home decór and more. The service is not yet available in all stores, but it is being rolled out to many more.

While I love the idea of Pickup Today in theory, the first thing I noticed was that it is hard to find items online with this option available. has made this a little easier by allowing you to sort items that can be found your local store, but the number of items available to ship this way is often only a fraction of the items you could purchase with standard shipping or using their Site to Store feature (for which delivery can take much longer). For example, I initially planned to buy a lamp shade. Of the 451 items returned in my search, only 12 of them were available in my local store. Here’s hoping that more items will be made available using this feature.

Still, my experience using Pickup Today was great. The idea is that you place your order and select Pickup Today as your shipping option. In my case, this was the ONLY shipping option, since home delivery was not available. Once you place the order, you’ll receive email confirmation that your order has been placed. In about 4 hours, you should receive another email letting you know that your order is ready for pickup. There’s also an option to enter your phone number to receive a text message — a great feature if you plan to be out and about.

My husband and I had to run some errands and we wound up going to Walmart anyway. That was shortly after I’d placed my order, so I thought I’d have to go back to the store later for pickup — an error of my own scheduling. But as we were checking out with the couple of items we needed, I decided to check my phone to see if my order was ready for pickup. Sure enough, I’d received a text that my order was ready. This was less than an hour after I originally placed the order. So while they promise delivery in 4 hours, my order was available much faster than that. I was impressed.

I went to the back of the store to pick up my order, and while noone was working the counter, a sign instructed me to press a touch screen to alert associates that I needed to be helped. The wait took a few minutes, but an associate finally came to help me. I simply showed her the text message with my order number, and she grabbed it for me. Quick and painless.

Will I use the service again? Absolutely! I’m famous for forgetting items when I go to the store, forgetting a gift until the day of a birthday party, or needing to pick up something quickly, but not wanting to be hassled with walking around the store to find it. I do wish that the pickup counter were closer to the front of the store rather than all the way at the back near electronics, but overall, the service is incredibly valuable to me.

To learn more about Pick Up Today and to see if it’s available in your area, just got to and check your zip code!
