This week, I went to Los Angeles for the first time ever, and I have to say, it would be difficult to beat this first impression. Why? Because I went there to attend the premiere of the new Jackie Robinson movie, 42, as a red carpet correspondent for Walmart!

42premiere-1

42premiere-2

Walmart is a platinum sponsor of the movie, which means that their involvement went far beyond just the premiere. There’s also the Walmart “42″ field refurbishment program, a partnership between Walmart, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, Scotts, the Ball Park brand and the Jerry Clark Foundation. Walmart selected ballparks in need of refurbishment in Orlando, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Bentonville, Ark., each designated to receive a long overdue makeover designed to encourage young players. At each event, kids from the respective communities had the opportunity to participate in a baseball clinic, interact with local MLB players, and community leaders. As a result of Walmart‘s sponsorship, we were invited to the press line with all the major news organizations to interview the stars as they walked in. Quite literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me.

To put this into perspective, a year ago, I never would’ve accepted the offer. I would’ve allowed my fear of being in front of the camera and messing everything up get the best of me, and I would’ve declined. But boy, am I glad I said yes!

Joining me on the red carpet was Erika Brown of Chic Shopper Chic, and I am so thankful to her for sharing her own red carpet experience and making me feel at ease.

42premiere-8

We were tasked with interviewing the cast, including Chadwick Boseman (Jackie Robinson), Harrison Ford (Branch Rickey), Nicole Beharie (Rachel Robinson), and many others. We spent the days and hours before the event preparing questions for the cast and (gasp) actually trying to remember what to ask each person. And then there’s the little fact that you’re talking to celebrities right next to journalists who do it for a living. Talk about intimidating!

The red carpet environment is a bit nuts, with press lined up alongside trying to get everyone’s attention. This means that we missed some of the stars we wanted to get, but Erika did manage to snag Harrison Ford:

42premiere-5

And I got to speak to the movie’s producer, Thomas Tull.

42premiere-6

Tull is most famous for his superhero movies and the Hangover franchise, so I was curious about what made him decide to make a period movie. When I asked why he thought it was important to tell Jackie Robinson’s story now, he said that he had spoken to a group of kids who played baseball, and very few of them had any idea who Robinson was. Let that sink in. The idea that children of any color — but particularly black children — could be playing baseball and have no knowledge of the man who made it possible for everyone to have major league dreams is insane! Tull wanted to tell Robinson’s story on the big screen so we never forget his legacy.

Oh. And did I mention I also spoke to Laila Ali? And she told me I was pretty? And when I tweeted about it with a photo, she responded? Yeah. That happened.

Check out this video of our red carpet experience, all of which was filmed:

I’m so proud of myself!

And as an inside bonus that probably only mattered to me, everything I wore to the premiere was thrifted — including my necklace and shoes (my trusty BCBG ankle-strap flats).

But that was just the beginning. Next, we got to actually watch the premiere. Honestly, the movie is a must-see. As a black woman who knew Jackie Robinson’s story, it was incredibly powerful to see it come to life on the screen.

Jackie is a hero by every stretch of the imagination, and the amount of resolve it took to break the color line in baseball without losing his temper is a strength that most of us likely do not possess. So it’s easy to understand why the number 42 is the ONLY number in all of baseball that has been universally retired. As in no one, on any team, can ever wear the number 42. Except for each April, when every player on every team wears 42 in homage to Jackie Robinson.

I will be taking my family to see the film, which will be in theaters tomorrow, and recommending that my extended family and friends see it too. It is a slice of American history that all of us — especially kids who have less experience with blatant racism — can stand to remember.

At times, the movie made me cringe (Caution: The N word is used throughout, and though it makes complete sense in this context, it may require some explaining to children), it made me laugh, it made me cheer, it made me teary-eyed. But more than anything else, it made me thankful that change is possible, no matter how unlikely or difficult it may seem. No matter how many naysayers you have to ignore in the process and how many times you have to swallow your pride.

42premiere-9

And after you see the film, if you’re as inspired as I am, you can celebrate by heading to Walmart for a t-shirt to commemorate the event in one of these great graphic prints.

This is the type of movie I’ll definitely buy on DVD so we can watch it as a family, talk about the issues it tackles, and use it as a teaching tool for my daughter. I am so thankful that I got to experience a real Hollywood premiere and find out from the producer and cast why this is an important story for everyone.

My family and I like to watch movies and shows based on the Bible. In part, we use it as an educational tool for our daughter, who seems to remember lessons when they are presented as entertainment. But we also like to see how the filmmakers and writers interpret the stories we know and love so well, both visually and in terms of message.

So you can imagine that we’ve been watching “The Bible” on the History Channel for the last few weeks with great interest.

If you haven’t been watching, “The Bible” is a 10-episode series produced by Mark Burnett of “Survivor” fame, along with his wife, actress Roma Downey. It began Sunday, March 3, on the history channel, and the third episode in the series will air tomorrow night at 8 p.m.

Thus far, we have been captivated by the stories. We’ve seen Noah and the ark, Exodus, Samson and Delilah, David & Goliath and more. The stories have been brief in order to get through several of them in a single episode, but they’ve been well told and, as far as I can tell, relatively accurate.

thebible2

As people of color, we’re also always interested to see how Biblical figures are represented in terms of race and culture. Suffice it to say that we usually don’t see faces that look like us, nor like the people native to the regions where the true Biblical stories actually happened, on the big or small screens. While there is definitely some room for improvement, we were pleased to see that some major characters, including Samson and his mother, were people of color, along with several of God’s angels and others throughout the stories.

thebible1

We’re intrigued enough to sit in front of the TV each Sunday night until the conclusion of the series, and we will absolutely use it as a teaching tool and a reminder of why Biblical study is important to believers.

If you’ve already missed the first couple of episodes, don’t miss the rest. You can also pre-order the series from Walmart and get a digital HD copy, which will be available only to Walmart pre-sell customers, along with exclusive VUDU content: a “First Look” at all 10 episodes.

SOA: Sons of Anarchy

It’s rare that I get really invested in a TV show. I started to feel that way with Breaking Bad, I was all in for the first few seasons of Burn Notice, and I’m in the beginning stages of obsession with Scandal, but I’m not completely there yet. But Sons of Anarchy? Why do I feel like I know these characters personally?

I’d heard of “Sons”, and even caught glimpses of scenes from time to time while flipping channels. But given the story — about a bunch of bikers to whom I thought I could never relate — I never paid attention. Well, thank you Netflix for changing my mind.

My husband and I started watching SOA about a month ago, and we finally finished watching season 5 a few nights ago. And it feels like I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster.

I’ve laughed, sobbed like a baby, grimaced and been downright disgusted, but I’ve never lost interest. I’ve rooted for the characters and taken a sick pleasure in watching some of them die in vengeance for their own misdeeds. While there is some juvenile comedy, sex and gore, more than anything else, “Sons” is just really well written and smart. I’m trying really hard not to deliver any spoilers for folks who haven’t yet watched the show or who haven’t seen Season 5.

soa3-tarajax

The writers have a knack for delivering plot twists you’d never see coming — even when watching all the episodes in succession — and the acting is truly awesome.

I never would’ve thought that baby-faced British actor Charlie Hunnam, who once starred in Queer as Folk, would make a good biker — much less a believable one. But Charlie’s turn as SAMCRO president Jax Teller delivers a savage, but brilliant anti-hero with a heart who you can’t help but root for. You want his marriage to Tara (played by Maggie Siff), a talented surgeon, to work out even though you know it’s unlikely it will end well. ‘Cause like a friend of mine said on Facebook, Tara ain’t about that life.

And then there are the characters you just straight up hate, like Jax’s mother Gemma (played by Katey Sagal, who I still see as Peggy Bundy in “Married with Children”), and his stepfather Clay Morrow (played by Ron Perlman, who my husband and I call the walrus, ’cause that’s what he looks like). They’re such great villains, even when they don’t mean to be, that you’d put a bullet in their heads yourself if you could.

soa4

Somehow, even as the club makes you shake your head in disbelief for the things they’re willing to do and the people they’re willing to kill/intimidate/bribe/work with, you still want them to come out on top. It helps that show creator Kurt Sutter — who also plays the completely insane Otto, a SAMCRO member on Death Row — and the writers don’t attempt to gloss over heavy topics.

Even the undertones of race, racism and sexism are executed well and feel true to life. Unlike some shows with white characters and writers who prefer to pretend that other races simply don’t exist, Sons not only shows other races, but features them pretty predominantly. They offer what feels like an accurate depiction of how racially exclusive biker gangs tend to be and the often complicated relationships between gangs and groups of different races and cultures.

So if you see me wearing SAMCRO biker gear over the next few months, you’ll understand why :)

I’m at a loss for a show that will fill the hole left by the end of season 5 and it’s cliffhanger. Season 6 probably won’t start until September. I don’t think I can wait that long.

NOTE: All images from FX Network

It is no secret that we are big gamers in my family. In the past 6 months as I have worked to lose weight and develop healthy habits, 99% of my exercise has come from active video games or YouTube videos. So I’m always looking for something new, and fun, to add to my collection to keep me interested in working out and keep my family active. Given that dancing is among my daughter’s and my favorite interests and we have a bunch of dance games in our collection, adding Just Dance 4 to the mix was only natural. We recently had a family game night centered on dance and football. And boy, did we have a blast!

We started by popping some low fat popcorn and gathering some other healthy snacks, along with big glasses of water. Dancing works up a sweat and an appetite.

This is the first version of Just Dance that we’ve gotten for the XBOX with Kinect rather than the Wii, and let me tell you — the difference is remarkable.

On the Wii, a lot of dances feel repetitive and almost too simple. It’s really easy to outsmart the game by simply moving your right hand, which hold the controller. On Kinect though, you have to actually put in some effort to get the moves right. It doesn’t require as much precision as Dance Central, for example, to get a good score, but you do have to move your whole body.

My daughter and husband got the party started.

I couldn’t help myself. I made video. And laughed uncontrollably while editing it. Take a look:

But I didn’t get off easy. Not at all. My hubby didn’t record video, but he did snap a bunch of photos to capture the ridiculousness. Here’s an animated gif of my and my daughter’s dance for your viewing pleasure:

Hilarious!

One thing I can say I really appreciate about Just Dance 4 is that it allows four people to play at the same time. Our living room isn’t quite big enough to do that without us running into each other, but if we had a bigger room, it’s nice to know we can all play as a family. The song selection is also pretty awesome. Both my husband and I are from the Caribbean, and we’ve passed our love of reggae music onto our daughter. We always gravitate toward songs with a reggae feel, or world music. There aren’t many, but I’m glad at least a few were included.

Our next stop on movie night? Over to the PlayStation to play Madden 2013. It probably goes without saying that my husband was more excited about this than anyone else, but I admit, it’s pretty cool. The graphics are awesome, and according to my husband and daughter, the controls in this new version really take the game play experience to another level. I watched them play a couple of games, and my daughter is actually pretty good!

If you have a family full of gamers like ours, you’ll be happy to learn about the GamerNetwork, a great online resource to help you find video games for the whole family can enjoy. They can answer your questions any video game on any console, because real gamers are available to supply their extensive knowledge about them. Follow @GamerNetworkHQ on Twitter and send them your questions!

DISCLOSURE: I am a member of the Walmart Moms program. Walmart has provided me with video games to try as well as compensation for sharing our family game night and The Gamer Network with you. Participation is voluntary and, as usual, all opinions are my own.

If there’s one thing that everyone in my family can agree on, it’s that we love video games. Over the years, we’ve acquired a Wii, an XBOX and a Playstation 3, and they all get regular use — for everything from watching movies to exercise to entertaining guests. But aside from creating avatars that look the way we all wish we did, it’s not often we really get to be a part of the game.

With the NCAA Football 13 game, though, you can “get covered” — literally. In conjunction with Walmart, you can create a cover for the game featuring your favorite team and your face! How do you do it? Simple:

  • Choose your console (XBOX or PS3) and your favorite college team, and upload a picture of yourself to add to the cover.

  • You can also customize the player’s skin color, which was helpful, given that the default was white.
  • Once you’re done, you can choose to share your new cover with your Facebook friends or you can print it at home, cut it out and stick it inside your game case!

As much as I love gaming, I’ve never been big on sports games, so I used a photo of my hubby. Now, he’s walking around feeling like a football star in spite of the fact that he’s never set foot on a field — but that’s the point, right?

As for the game, my husband is still learning the ropes. He’s used to playing NFL-based Madden, but I’m sure he’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly. For those of you who have played NCAA Football games in the past, there are some changes to this edition:

  • Heisman Challenge: You can play as one of 10 former Heisman Trophy winners and use his legendary skills for your favorite college team in a quest to match his award-winning historical performances and win the Heisman Trophy once again.
  • All-New Passing Game: A revolutionary passing system brings added authenticity to the Quarterback position from ball trajectory to play action pass to the option. Enhanced receiver control puts you in position to make a play on the ball and new read and react defensive coverage delivers greater realism on the gridiron. (My husband said he has noticed a difference in ease of passing).
  • Reaction Time: Great players see and feel the game differently. With Reaction Time, the game slows down during key moments, increasing your on-field awareness and opening up more opportunities as you sense things before they happen.
  • Dynamic Dynasty: For the first time ever, your recruiting grades can change each week based on your performance in Dynasty mode. In addition, Gameday Saturdays come to life with live studio updates and enhanced commentary by Rece Davis.

I know that this game will get a lot more playing time around here in the coming weeks. I’m just thankful that my hubby got it for the XBOX, since I tend to play my favorites on the PS3, and I know he’ll be hogging the console for a while.

Disclosure: I am a member of the Walmart Moms program. I was provided with compensation for sharing my experience with NCAA Football 13 with you. Participation is voluntary and, as usual, all opinions are my own.

Most of us have a few movies in our collection that watch repeatedly. For my family, the list includes Scarface and Grease, and my daughter loves The Princess and the Frog and the Madagascar movies. On any “bored” day, we could pull out these movies and truly enjoy watching them, despite the fact that we’ve seen them all at least 10 times each. Do you have DVDs in your collection that are like this?

Well, now you can take those movies with you anywhere you go, thanks to a partnership between Walmart and Vudu. The new Disc to Digital service, also known as Walmart Entertainment, allows you to get digital copies of the movies you already own, which you can view on a variety of supported, internet-connected devices, including your desktop computer, laptop, iPad and iPhone. Of course, assuming your DVD comes with digital copy, you could always upload it onto said devices. But think about how much memory it would require to do that, and tell me that having your movies readily available in cloud storage isn’t a more palatable option.

To use the service, you’ll have to sign up for a Vudu account. The search the list of movies that are available for Disc to Digital transfer. To be fair, not all movies are available, but you can find a large number of popular titles from the following studios: Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Once you’ve determined that your chosen title is available, simply add it to your list and print the list out.

Finally, take your printed list AND your physical DVDs to the photo department of your nearest Walmart and get your digital copies! Yes, you do have to take the DVDs with you, but you get to keep them and take them back home with you. As shown in the image above, it will cost you $2 to get a standard definition movie, $5 to upgrade from standard to high-def, or $2 to get a high-definition digital copy of a movie that you have on Blu-ray.

I got digital copies of Grease, Scarface, The Italian Job (the remake), and Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa. Since this is a brand-new service, it took a while to find someone who knew how to help me, but thankfully, the staff in the photo department took my cell phone number and allowed me to do my grocery shopping while they worked their magic. Then, they simply called me when they were finished. Your DVD will be stamped to prove that you’ve already gotten a digital copy, but the stamp is very inconspicuous.

Take a look at video below to see how the selection process works and what happens after your movies are made available on the cloud:

As you can see, my daughter is thrilled about the idea that she can now watch Madagascar 2 on the iPad whenever she wants, and it will help distract her during long doctor visits and car rides. And although a lot of our favorites weren’t available, we’ll keep checking back to see if they have been added.

What are some of the movies you and your family can’t live without?

Disclosure: I am a member of the Walmart Moms program. I was provided with compensation for my time and effort in sharing their Fighting Hunger initiative with you — though I would have gladly shared this awesome cause with you for free. Participation is voluntary and as usual, all opinions are my own.

Only Dr. Seuss could make a lasting lesson about green living simple enough for children to understand. The Lorax has long been among my favorite books to teach kids about environmentalism, and now, we’ll all be able to enjoy the story on the big screen. The makers of “Despicable Me,” also an awesome movie, have created the new Lorax movie.

Do you know the story? In a nutshell, it is the story of a greedy entrepreneur who, in his zeal to make “stuff”, robs a nearby forest of all its Truffula trees. He is repeatedly warned by the Lorax that continuing to cut down trees will have devastating effects, but he doesn’t listen. Predictably, the entrepreneur doesn’t admit what he is doing to the environment until there are no trees left, and he finally looks around and realizes that all the animals are gone and the landscape has turned into a sad, scarred remnant of what it once was.

Check out the trailer:

My daughter actually has the original Lorax movie on DVD, but it doesn’t have the glitz and sparkle of the Disney and Pixar movies she’s used to. Based on the trailer, I have high hopes that this one will keep her attention. Danny Devito is the voice of the Lorax, and Taylor Swift and Zac Efron give voice to two of the other main characters. I really can’t wait to take her to see this modern take on one of my favorite stories. It premieres on March 2, 2012, and I’ll be counting the days.

Maybe it’s because my husband and I are originally from the Caribbean and grew up with their music, or maybe it is because my hubby is a reggae artist. Whatever the reason, we are both huge music lovers and fans of the Marley family and their music and various product lines. So when we learned that they have ventured into the world of music technology, we were more than a little excited.

The Marleys, under their House of Marley label, recently introduced a line of sustainable music accessories, including high-quality speakers and headphones. From their website:

Bob believed in a better world, forged from passion, love and responsibility. Now it’s up to us, to turn his ideals in actions and his principles into products. Piece by piece, we’ll create the world he imagined, through products that give joy and give back.

The new line of audio products includes three collections: Jammin’, featuring bright colors and futuristic designs; Freedom, featuring wood tones and more subdued product styling; and Destiny, with sharper lines and chrome accents. The collections include earbuds, headphones, docking stations, speakers and boom boxes, and the products are currently available for pre-order.

But here’s the sweetest part. The House of Marley audio collections feature FSC-certified wood and recycled/recyclable aluminum and plastics. What’s more, a portion of the company’s proceeds go to 1Love.org, a nonprofit, created in partnership with the Marley family, that benefits charities that empower youth, protect the planet and encourage global peace. Partners include charity:water and UNEP.

I think I’m in love…

Why It’s Green:

  • Products made of FSC-certified wood, along with recycled/recyclable plastic and aluminum
  • Products packaged in recycled/recyclable material
  • Headphones and earbuds come in reusable bags
  • The House of Marley asks customers to send in their old headphones so they can be recycled

Price: $29.99-499.99 (available for pre-order)
