I consider myself to be a pretty crafty person, but if there’s one thing I’ve never gotten the hang of, it’s knitting and crocheting. Which is strange, because my mother is the queen of crochet. She makes hats and blankets and booties and all manner of cool things, but when she tried to teach me as a child, I could never really get the hang of it.
All of this to say that when Walmart offered me a chance to try to make something with Sashay yarn, I was interested, but a little intimidated by my history with yarn. I needn’t have been worried.
Sashay yarn is beautiful, but it’s different from your typical brand of single-strand yarn. On the ball, it looks like this:
But when stretched, it looks like this:
I had no idea where to even begin. But I am so thankful that we live in an age where there’s a YouTube tutorial for almost everything, and this was no exception. After finding tutorials to make a beautiful ruffle scarf a little too complicated for my non-knitting brain, I found this tutorial for making a chain scarf in two ways: By finger knitting or using a crochet needle.
After finger knitting a few inches, I decided I wanted a tighter, more consistent look in my knots, so I chose to use the crochet needle.
Seriously, this was crazy easy. I didn’t want a super long scarf, so I used somewhere between half and three-quarters of the ball of yarn. This took me 20-minutes to do, tops. Here’s the finished result:
Isn’t it pretty? Not to mention the model is gorgeous 🙂
I love how it looks on a solid colored shirt, but I can easily imagine it with a patterned top as well. The variegated coloring of the yarn is really gorgeous and makes it so that your knots don’t have to be perfect at all. Once its all looped around your neck, any mistakes are all but invisible.
Maybe one day, I’ll feel adventurous enough to attempt the ruffle scarf with the other two balls of sashay yarn, but for now, I’m just thankful I was able to make something pretty in very little time. This is the type of thing I wouldn’t mind making as a gift because it looks like it took a lot longer than it actually did. I might have to stockpile this yarn so I can make a bunch of them for Christmas.
