Somehow, now that I’m paying a lot more attention what I wear and how I put myself together, it somehow always feels like I have nothing to wear. That’s not true, of course, but when you’re going through your closet at the last minute, it can definitely feel that way.
Case in point: My husband, who is a reggae singer, was scheduled to perform at Atlanta CaribFest this past Saturday. After spending an hour going through my closet, I finally decided on an outfit, but I had no shoes. So I ran to Target, 45 minutes before we needed to leave, to grab a pair of riding boots. But, of course, while I was there I had to peruse the clearance racks. And what did I find? A shirt for $2.40 and a skirt for $6.88 in colors that felt like Fall.
I had no intention of wearing them that day, but after running around the store in the light sweater I’d planned to wear, I was left feeling hot and sticky. So about 2 minutes before we walked out the door, I decided to switch to the clearance shirt and skirt I’d just bought, along with my new boots.
And you know what? I loved the combination! I felt cool (temperature-wise) and confident, and I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more skater skirts — particularly in leather.
Anyway, that’s the point, right? Aren’t we supposed to wear clothes that make us feel good, regardless of what anyone else might think or say? It took me years to get the memo, but I finally got it, and I’m not turning back!
